Since 2023, we have worked with South Gloucestershire Council on a year-long programme helping social care staff understand racism, recognise how it shows up at work, and put anti-racism into practice for service users and colleagues.
Background
South Gloucestershire Council set out to support its social care staff in understanding racism, how it manifests in the workplace, and how to be proactively anti-racist in their practice. The aim was to help dismantle systemic and institutional racism and reduce the disparities it causes for racially minoritised service users and colleagues.
What we did
We delivered a mix of virtual and classroom sessions with tailored pre-learning, plus a specific session for managers, who are key to receiving reports of racism and shaping culture. Every learner left with an individual pledge, followed up in supervision and one-to-ones to keep the knowledge and behaviours alive.
Growth and impact
managers trained across two dedicated courses.
learners trained across 13 race awareness courses.
learner left with a personal pledge, tracked in supervision.
Managers began building an allyship scale for supervision and reviews, holding themselves accountable across knowledge, behaviour and action. The work surfaced new priorities, from cultural competency and intersectionality training to a Critical Friends initiative, and prompted updates to policies and the pathway for reporting racism and microaggressions. The response was strong enough that the council is planning to roll the training out across the whole organisation and recommend it to partners.
