Winstons Wish

Race Ahead® and Race Aware · charity

Helping a national charity become actively anti-racist.

Winston's Wish is the UK's first childhood bereavement charity, reaching over 60,000 grieving children and young people every year. Our training became a cornerstone of their move to embed racial equity across the organisation.

Background

The challenge

Winston’s Wish has led young people’s grief support since 1992, supporting any bereaved young person up to the age of 25 and advising the adults around them. They wanted to foster a culture of inclusion and racial equity, both to better support their service users and to strengthen internal representation.

What we did

The approach

We tailored both Race Ahead and Race Aware for the charity, with a launch session attended by all employees to build shared understanding and commitment. Bianca then continued as a consultant, supporting recruitment and the development of a dedicated anti-racist policy.

Growth and impact

Confidence, policy and lasting change

The training had a sustained impact on confidence, with people now feeling safe to talk about topics related to race, and it inspired a culture of continuous learning. It became a key component of a broader initiative to transform the charity into an anti-racist organisation, playing a crucial role in formulating an anti-racist policy. Bianca's ongoing consultancy has helped eradicate procedures that may have unwittingly upheld racism, introduce clearer measures for logging and challenging discrimination, and embed anti-racist principles into the organisation for real, sustained change.

Key results

What changed

In their words

"Bianca managed it brilliantly. She engaged them in a way they could manage, stretched them appropriately, and gave them permission not to know everything yet. That had a big impact."
